NO OBLIGATION TO RETURN TO INDIA (NORI)

Embassy of India continues to provide Miscellaneous Consular Services through Postal mail/shipping.

NORI applicants not based in USA may approach the nearest Indian Mission to avail NORI service. NORI applicants in India may approach CPV Division of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

NORI applications for J-1 categories (Au pair and Edu Care, Camp Counselor, Intern, International Visitor (department of state use), Professor and Research Scholar, Short-term Scholar, Specialist, Student, college/university, student, secondary, Summer Work Travel, Teacher, Trainee) shall follow the following process:-

Download the Miscellaneous Application form, fill it up carefully and affix photograph on the same.

2.

Notarized photocopies of the first and last pages of the current valid passport and notarized photocopy of the J1 Visa.

3.

Notarized photocopy of any of the following documents as proof of residence: US Driving License, Utility Bill, Lease Agreement, State Identity Card or Mortgage Deed.

Photocopies of these documents may also be attached with the application. Ensure that photocopies of these documents are legible.

Send a copy of your CASE NUMBER given by US Immigration authorities (www.uscis.gov ) to the Embassy (For Details, Please visit https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/study-exchange/student/residency-waiver.html).

Fee: A fee of US$25.00 (Twenty Five Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00 (Two Only). The fees may be paid in two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC.

Processing Time: Ten working days from the date of receipt of postal mail at the Embassy, subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicant and verification of applicant’s particulars.

The Consulates in USA, Mission/Posts abroad and CPV Division will issue the waiver certificate and forward (ink signed copy only) to the Embassy of India in Washington DC for onward transmission to the Waiver Department, Department of State, who will then notify the applicant directly regarding further status of the application.

NORI applications for J-1 category of Government Visitor shall follow the above-mentioned process after seeking clearance from their parent department.

NORI applications for J-1 category of Physician shall follow the following the above-mentioned process after obtaining necessary clearance from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Please mail the documents along with a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope to Consular Section, Embassy of India, 2536, Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington DC 20008. Incomplete applications will be sent back indicating the requisites to complete the application.
