Registration of Birth

Birth (out of India) of a new born child to Indian parents should be first registered at following MHA website, where details/procedure are available

As a next step, birth of the new born should be registered at the Consulate in order to obtain the Indian passport. The registration of birth must be done within one year of the Child's birth. After registration of birth, please apply for Indian Passport of the Child through CKGS (

Documents Requirements:

A Original birth registration certificate of the child issued by the local authorities along with a photocopy.

A copy of Current Indian passports of both parents in original and photocopy of the first and last pages.

A copy of the Certificate of Indian Citizenship if acquired by Registration/Naturalization.

A copy of marriage Certificate of the Parents

A declaration that the <minor child does not hold the passport of any other country.

A proof of US Visa Status of both parents: Copy of any one of – Visas on passports (H1B, H4 etc) and the copy of I-94 / Green Card / Employment Authorization Document (Work Permit) / I-797, I-140 or I-20

How to Apply by in Person Mode ?

1.Download the Miscellaneous Application form and fill it up carefully along with the completed Birth Registration Form .

2.Two copies of the print out of duly filled in, online MHA Application form referred above, signed by both parents, same as in their current passport, in front of the Consular Officer at Consulate.

3.Fill in Notarized Affidavit of both parents that they have not taken any other nationality for the child.

4.Fill in Notarized Affidavit (NOC) of both parents that they have no objection to the registration and obtaining passport for the child.

5.Fee: A fee of US$ 27.00 (Twenty-Seven Only). The fee is to be paid in cash only

6.Processing Time: Application will be processed and handed over to applicant on the same day

How to Apply by Mail/Post ?

1.Follow the same procedure to fill up the application and enclose the same required documents as detailed above in the section How to apply by in person mode.

2.Please note that while applying by mail two copies of the print out of duly filled in, online application form from MHA Website signed by both parents needs to be Notarized and signatures of parents should be same as in their current passport.

3.Fee: A fee of US$27.00 (Twenty-Seven Only). Fee may be paid by Money order/Cashiers’ Cheque in favor of Consulate General of India, New York. PERSONAL CHEQUES, CREDIT CARDS, DEBIT CARDS OR OTHER BANKING INSTRUMENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

4.Processing Time: Applications received by postal mail will be processed and dispatched within a maximum 10 business days (excluding the time taken in mailing Company).

Consulate is not responsible for any delay due to Mailing Company.

Please Note :Total fee mentioned hereinclude the fee of US$ 2/- (two) towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). This is onetime fee for first copy of attestation/first copy of certificate, for subsequent certificate/attestation (if required) no ICWF fee will be charged.
