5th International day of Yoga 2019

Prepare your body, spirit and mind! The 21st June 2019 is the    5th International Day of Yoga. The Consulate General of India, New York in cooperation with Friends of Yoga are collaborating to present the biggest event of the season on June 23rd, 2019 at FairBridge Hotel & Conference Center, 195 Davidson Avenue, Somerset, NJ 08873.

Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline, which was evolved thousands of years ago for physical and spiritual wellbeing of the humankind. The word ‘Yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. It has gained worldwide popularity due to its immense health benefits. It not only helps in improving physical health but also brings about inner peace by reducing stress and anxiety. Medical research in recent years has uncovered many physical and mental benefits that yoga offers, corroborating the experience of millions of practitioners.

The International Day of Yoga on June 21st was declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11th 2014. The date of June 21st was chosen since this is the summer solstice which is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.

“Yoga for Peace and Non-Violence” is the theme chosen for this year’s celebrations. Over 2,000 Yoga enthusiasts are expected to join this grand celebration. Yoga sessions will be conducted by professionally trained Yoga teachers following the standard Common Yoga Protocol for the International Day of Yoga. This will be day of celebration of not only yoga, but, also, Indian cuisine, arts & culture. In addition to Yoga demonstrations, there will be number of performances by eminent artists.

This year participating organizations in the International Day of Yoga are World Vegan Vision (WVV), Vihangam Yoga, ISHA Foundation, Bramhakumaris (Rajayoga), Art of Living (AOL), Heartfullness, Hasya Yoga, Gujarathi Samaj of NY, United Rudra Foundation, Assam Foundation of NA, Association of Indians in America, Indo American Cultural Association, Federation of India Associations (FIA), Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) & Friends of MP NY/NJ.
