19th Media India Lecture Series: Indian Classical dance of Assam: "Sattriya"

Continuing its series of monthly Media - India lecture, Consulate General of India hosted Padma Shri Awardee Dr. Sunil Kothari on November 18,2015. Padma Shri Awardee Dr. Sunil Kothari spoke about the 8th classical dance of Assam 'Sattriya' followed by Kathak dance 'Bansivala' performed by Anisha Muni. The evening was well attended by over 50 people including prominent members of both Indian and American community, students, and members of media.

In his remarks, Amb Mulay welcomed Dr Kothari and performer Ms Muni. He also commended the efforts of Indians abroad in keeping the traditions alive by pursuing the classical dance and arts of India continuously.

Dr. Sunil Kothari's lecture on SATTRIYA included screenings of excerpts from the film "In the Mists of Majuli.".The film captures the essence of Sattriya - how the monks are trained in this dance from childhood and the effect it has on their everyday lives.

The evening concluded with a classical dance performance by MsAnisha Muni, a disciple of ShriPrashant Shah, followed by dinner.
