Indian Classical Vocal Concert by Dr. Sugata Marjit, 10th September 2013

 

The Consulate General of India, New York organized in association with Music Department of the Manhattanville College an Indian classical music (vocal) concert by renowned vocalist Dr. Sugata Marjit on 10th September 2013 at the Consulate Ballroom. The programme also featured screening of documentary film ‘From River to River” by Prof. Alakananda Mukerji of the Manhattanville College.

Consul General Ambassador Dnyaneshwar Mulay extended his warm greetings and welcome to the guests. Ms. Aroon Shivdasani of the Indo-American Arts Council introduced Dr. Sugata Marijit, who is not only a well-known classical singer but also an eminent economist, and Dr. Alakananda Mukerji, who is Professor at Studio Art Department of the Manhattanville College.

The programme opened with the screening of the documentary film ‘From River to River’. The film through the festival of Durga Puja depicts the life of clay artisans of Kumartuli (potters\' town) in the northern part of Kolkata, India. The film has the rendering of Indian classical musical compositions by Dr. Marjit.

  

The film screening was followed by vocal music concert by Dr. Marijit. During the concert he presented compositions from various ‘gharanas’, schools of Indian classical music. He was accompanied by Dibyarka Chatterjee on Tabla. Large number of members of the cultural community in the region, including prominent members of the Indian-American community and local dignitaries attended the concert.
