Education Cooperation

Education partnership is an important pillar of India- US ties and both the countries share strong linkages and history of higher education collaboration. The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) was set up after a bilateral agreement on education exchange was signed between India and the US on February 2, 1950. In July 2008, India and the US signed a new agreement, whereby India and the US  committed to fund the Fulbright program as equal partners. USIEF has awarded around 20,000 Fulbright and other grants to US and Indian scholars, professionals and students since its inception in 1950s.

Economic impact of International Students in US

NAFSA: Association of International Educators announced on November 2024, that international students at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy during the 2023–2024 academic year, supporting 378,175 jobs.

Indian Students in US

The United States remains the top choice for Indian students pursuing higher education abroad and India is the largest source of international students in America.

As far as the number of Indian students in the United States is concerned, according to latest available data (January 2025) from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are currently 255,447 students from India in the USA. (https://studyinthestates.). Majority of those students are enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. As far as the number of Indian students in the jurisdiction of CGI, NY is concerned, according to latest available data (January 2025) from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are total 83,074 students from India in the ten states that comes under the jurisdiction of CGI, NY.

Indian Students in USA Registration

The Embassy/Consulate Generals of India in USA seek to engage Indian students in #NewIndia. Students are being encouraged to register at https://www.indianembassyusa.gov.in/Indian_Students_Registration to connect with the consulate and to receive notifications regarding various initiatives and programs of Government of India. Among the 14,648 students registered in the portal over 6000 comes under the jurisdiction of Consulate in New York.

 

National Overseas Scholarship Scheme of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Under the NOS Scholarship scheme by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, currently 18 scholars are studying in various Universities under this Consulate’s jurisdiction.

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program offers grants to India for U.S. citizens. U.S. students and young professionals may apply for a grant to pursue independent research in India, while U.S. scholars and professionals may teach or research in India through Fulbright. In addition, U.S. scholars are eligible to apply for the Fulbright Specialist Program and U.S. students are eligible to apply for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program and the Critical Language Enhancement Awards. U.S. citizens are also eligible to apply for the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program and the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program. Since January 2024, this Post has issued over 24 visas for Fulbright scholars and 59 Research visas.

India Chairs

ICCR, in consultation with Indian Missions abroad, establishes Chairs of Indian Studies (Political Science, Philosophy, History, Sociology& Economics) & Hindi, Sanskrit in different foreign universities / institutes across the globe. In the U.S, ICCR has two chairs under this Consulate’s jurisdiction - Rutgers University (New Jersey) and University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). The Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair in Indian Constitutional Law was established through an endowment from Government of India on September 2009 at the Columbia University, New York.

 

Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR) Scholarship

Indian Council for Cultural Relations administers various scholarship programs annually and awards about 3000+ scholarships under 21 different schemes to foreign students from about 180 countries. Among these 21 schemes, six are funded by ICCR from its grant and others are administered on behalf of MEA and Ministry of Ayush. The courses offered for studies are for Under-graduation, Post-graduation and Ph.D. levels. Each academic year, ICCR has about 6000+ of its foreign scholars who are studying at various Central/State Universities, Institutes, NITs, and Agricultural Institutions etc.

ICCR Scholarship Scheme for Indian Culture – For the nationals of all the countries to pursue courses of Indian dance, music, sculpture, Indian theatre, cuisine etc.

AYUSH Scholarship for Non-BIMSTEC Countries: To pursue courses in Indian traditional, medical systems AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy).

Consulate regularly gets applications and queries regarding ICCR scholarships. During AY 2023-24, 2 students under the jurisdiction of this Consulate has been awarded ICCR Scholarships.

India Corners

In keeping with the initiative of “Bharat Ek Parichay-Sharing Knowledge with the World’ at Educational Institutions abroad, the Consulate General of India in New York created various ‘India Corners’ at several prestigious Universities and libraries under the jurisdiction of this Consulate.

In collaboration with Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), the Consulate has opened India Corners in three public libraries in three different States, i.e., Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.  In addition to the above, the Consulate had earlier opened an India Center at the Bronx Community College, City University of New York.
