Education Cooperation

Education and knowledge partnership is an important pillar of India- US ties. The two countries share strong linkages and history of higher education collaboration. The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) was set up after a bilateral agreement on education exchange was signed between India and the US on February 2, 1950. In July 2008, India and the US signed a new agreement, whereby India and the US committed to fund the Fulbright program as equal partners. USIEF has awarded around 20,000 Fulbright and other grants to US and Indian scholars, professionals and students since its inception in 1950s.

Indian Students in US

NAFSA: Association of International Educators's latest analysis finds that international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $33.8 billion and supported 335,423 jobs to the U.S. economy during the 2021-2022 academic year. India remained the second-largest source of international students in America. 

As far as the number of Indian students in the United States is concerned, according to latest available data (November 2023) from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are 336,619 students from India in the USA currently in the student status (https://studyinthestates.). Majority of those students are enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. As far as the number of Indian students in the jurisdiction of CGI, NY is concerned, according to latest available data (November 2023) from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there are total 107,562 students from India in the ten states that comes under the jurisdiction of CGI, NY.

National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) awardees from Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

Under the NOS Scholarship scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Ministry of Tribal Affairs, currently 17 scholars are studying in various Universities under this Consulate’s jurisdiction.

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright Program offers grants to India for U.S. citizens. U.S. students and young professionals may apply for a grant to pursue independent research in India, while U.S. scholars and professionasl may teach or research in India through Fulbright. In addition, U.S. scholars are eligible to apply for the Fulbright Specialist Program and U.S. students are eligible to apply for the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program and the Critical Language Enhancement Awards. U.S. citizens are also eligible to apply for the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program and the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program. Since 2021, 85 US Citizens under this Consulate’s jurisdiction has availed Fulbright grants.

India Chairs

ICCR, in consultation with Indian Missions abroad, establishes Chairs of Indian Studies (Political Science, Philosophy, History, Sociology& Economics) & Hindi, Sanskrit in different foreign universities / institutes across the globe. In U.S, ICCR has two chairs under this Consulate’s jurisdiction - Rutgers University (New Jersey) and University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). The Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Chair in Indian Constitutional Law was established through an endowment from Government of India on September 2009 at the Columbia University, New York.

In keeping with the initiative of “Bharat Ek Parichay-Sharing Knowledge with the World’ at Educational Institutions abroad, the Consulate General of India in New York created various ‘India Corners’ at several prestigious Universities and libraries under the jurisdiction of this Consulate.
