celebrating 152nd Birth Anniversary of RABINDRANATH TAGORE

The Consulate General of India, New York organized an event at the Consulate to celebrate the 152nd birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on Friday, June 14, 2013. The event was organized in association with the Tagore Society of New York.

Consul General Ambassador Dnyaneshwar Mulay during his address described Rabindranath Tagore’s multi-faceted personality as a ‘kaleidoscope’. Besides being a great poet he had mastered all forms of art, including music and painting. He said Tagore’s contribution to the Indian society and culture is immense. He also emphasized on Tagore’s significant contribution towards humanism and internationalism. He said Tagore traveled extensively through out the world and touched the lives of people of different nations, languages and ethnicity. He recollected some of the incidences during his stay in Japan which show the influence of Tagore on the Japanese people.

The programme featured ‘Glimpses of Rabindra Sangeet’, a presentation of music style of Tagore by Sarmistha Adhikari and Debasis Adhikari. They were accompanied by Dibyarka Chatterjee on tabla and Kamala Prasad Mishra on violin. The segment was narrated by Chandan Nag. Another feature segment was ‘Bichitra’, presentation of Tagore dance, music and poetry recital. The artists included Subhra Goswami, Sweta Goswami, Madiha Shafique and Kerry Purtell.

The programme was conducted by Ms. Renee Lobo. Mr. Anadi Datta, President of the Tagore Society thanked the participants. The programme was attended by large number of members of various cultural organizations and Indian community.
